How Essential Oils are made.

Essential oils aren't really made, they are extracted from plant material.

The active/essential part that is extracted, is the essential oil.

Extraction can take from 1 hour to 22 hours. It is an 'art'.

THE TWO MOST COMMON FORMS OF EXTRACTION ARE

Cold Pressing is a similar process to how Olive Oil is obtained. This process is mainly used for the Citrus family - Orange, Lemon, Lime, Grapefruit, Bergamot. The whole fruit is pressed, then spun in a centrifuge to separate the juice from the oil.

Steam is passed through the plant material (leaves, bark, flower) to release the aromatic molecules as vapor. This vapor contains oil and water which is then separated into Essential Oil and Floral Water/Hydrosol.

SOMETHING TO LOOK OUT FOR

Solvents like Pentane, Hexane and Ethanol are used to extract the Essential Oil from the plant material. Used for delicate flowers like Jasmine and Rose that cannot tolerate the high heat of Steam Distillation and are not suitable for Cold-pressing.   The end product is referred to as an Absolute.   Some distillers say all solvents are removed from the essential oil and some say 1%-5% remain in the oil.

Fragrances are NOT Essential Oils. Fragrances are totally man made, synthetic chemicals known to cause a wide array of health issues.
