Most of us think of dental floss as one of those relatively insignificant bathroom products. But we recently discovered some facts about dental floss that were not insignificant but quite alarming.
WHAT IS DENTAL FLOSS MADE FROM
It’s not widely known or thought about, but most mainstream dental flosses are often made of Nylon and coated in Teflon and a synthetic wax (petroleum based).
As floss is in direct contact with your mouth and between your teeth it really begs the question are you absorbing Teflon and synthetic wax every time you floss? Dentists have convinced us flossing is good for our teeth and gums and I taught my kids how to floss, but I never thought I was filling them with toxins at the same time. 60% of what we put on our skin is absorbed into our bloodstream, I wonder how this percentage goes up when it’s in our mouth?
Ah, it's frustrating when you think your doing the ‘right’ thing!
So, off we went again to look for the best new alternative, nothing was perfect but we chose Dr Tungs Activated Charcoal Floss.

HOW DENTAL FLOSS WORKS
Smart Floss is clinically proven to be more effective than regular floss. It has been shown to remove up to 40% more plaque than most popular flosses. According to Dr.Tungs website.
Expands into interdental spaces for super cleaning.
The floss is gentle on gums, cushion-soft and stretchy, unlike flosses with no spring that can often hurt your gums and fingers.
AREA FOR FUTURE IMPROVEMENT
The floss is made from made of simple polyester fibers. These fibers are synthetic and not biodegradable but they are recyclable and a huge overall improvement on regular floss.
SHOULD I BRUSH OR FLOSS FIRST?
We went to Dr Burhenne from Ask the dentist and this is his answer:
“There are many differing theories on this. Some argue that flossing should come first because, when flossing, plaque and bits of food are loosened and should be brushed away after you’ve finished flossing. Here’s my opinion: As long as you’re asking this question, it means you’re doing both, and that’s what matters. The synergy between flossing and brushing (and not the order in which you do them) will lengthen your life, improve your cognitive abilities, and will keep your teeth healthy and beautiful.”
We have used Dr. Tungs vegan floss and it works really well and we think it's a great addition to your toxin free bathroom cabinet.
HOW TO DISPOSE OF YOUR DENTAL FLOSS
Don't flush floss down your toilet, it can block up your pipes. Put Dr. Tungs used floss in your recycle bin.
