Palm oil - the hidden ingredient with over 200 names

We are always researching, learning new stuff and expanding our knowledge base.  WELL,  this morning I was surprised at another thing I didn't know.

This blog is about a surprise ingredient I saw listed on a hair conditioner bar. I was going to buy it cos it was advertised as "the equivelent of 4 plastic bottles of conditioner".  Awesome YEAH !?!?..........NOPE.......

The first ingredient listed on the conditioner bar label was Behentrimonium Methosulfate. I had to look it up as I didn't recognise it  - turns out to be a Palm Oil product. 'BM' is used in conditioners, shampoos and lotions to give a slippery feel.  It's also used in fabric softener and hair relaxants.

Gotta give it credit, Palm oil is a super versatile oil. It's cheap, makes a nice creamy texture in products and the Oil palm tree yields 4–10 times more oil per hectare than other oilseed crops. BUT... the downside and social chat surrounding Palm Oil is due to the imapact it has on the environment and indigenous peoples. Major deforestation of precious rainforests, destruction of Orangutan habitat, draining and planting palm on peat lands, land disputes with rural communities — all of these have been major consequences of the global palm oil boom.

Below is listed 200 different names that Palm Oil is disguised under.  It makes it really hard for the conscious consumer to make educated choices when there is this level of deception. This is part of our mission - to call out the B.S............

Here's the lowdown.

Many food products have Palm Oil listed as 'vegetable oil' and in non food products there is at last count over 200 alternate names for palm oil.
If an ingredient in the product you are researching has any one of the following names then it is 95% likely to be palm oil unless you know the company has a clear 'no palm oil' policy so on odd occasions these ingredients may also be derived from other sources.
If the product you are checking has one of the ingredients below you may want to contact the company to find out it's derivation.

Palm oil and vegetable oil.  Only 3 vegetable oils must be labelled in food products in Australia and New Zealand. Those are peanut oil, sesame oil and soy bean oil. The reason for this is that a percentage of the population suffers allergies to these oils.

All other vegetable oils can be labelled under the generic veg oil term, however the label must declare the amount of saturated fat in the product.  If the label states vegetable oil and then goes on to state the amount of saturated fat you can count on that vegetable oil being either palm kernel oil, palm oil or coconut. This is a way of potentially identifying if a product has palm oil in it as other vegetable oils are not saturated. ( I didn't know that, it's a great tip to remember).

NOTE: Palm Sugar is a different species of palm and is not palm oil.  Vegetable gum is not palm oil derived.
